The 3G power problem

Over 30% of all mobile calls and 35% of mobile TV originate in the home.

Unfortunately, homes are extremely difficult places to try to get a 3G signal.  The walls absorb the majority of the RF energy.  And whatever makes it through – which could be as low as a fortieth of the signal – is scattered into multiple paths.

Since the available power in any 3G cell is shared between all users, a few indoor users can ruin availability and quality for the entire cell.

This 3G Power Problem cannot be solved with a macro network alone.  It’s far too expensive (even if communities allowed the dramatic increase in masts).

That’s where Oyster 3G comes in.

Oyster 3G is a basestation for the home. It takes traffic away from the macro network and routes it over the femtocell layer, using the customer’s broadband connection for backhaul.

It’s a low power solution which minimizes the risk of interference with your macro network.  And it’s a completely 3G solution, so you don’t need dual-mode handsets to benefit from the power of IP.

Every 3G operator will have to deal with the Power Problem.  Oyster 3G solves it in one bold stroke.

The femtocell of choice

Femtocells are generating a lot of excitement in the mobile industry.
And it’s no surprise: femtocells are an elegant, low cost solution to a problem that would otherwise cripple 3G penetration.

It’s relatively easy to make a femtocell.  But it’s much, much harder to make a complete system that’s consumer-ready and integrates with your existing network.

At ip.access, we’ve been deploying in-building access solutions for years.  We applied this experience to the non-trivial problems associated with 3G femtocells and have developed a complete, end-to-end solution that works for today’s networks and prepares for IMS.

On the way, we’ve solved the problems that other femtocell vendors are only just encountering, including:

  • Interference issues – Dynamic Power Management allows us to minimize interference with the macro network
  • Hand-in and hand-out – our seamless handover makes it automatic and invisible to the user
  • Bandwidth efficiency – maximizing the revenue you get from your spectrum
  • Voice quality – with voice payload multiplexing to optimise voice calls
  • The neighbour problem – we’ve patented re-usable scrambling codes to overcome the limit to the number of neighbour femtocells
  • Security – another patent on Disposable Authentication Vectors ensures ultimate security
  • Instant provisioning – each femtocell provisions itself automatically

Before you waste time analysing other femtocell products, make sure they can deal with these problems.  We’re doing it today and we’re ready to ramp up.
