Orange agrees in-flight calls deal

Orange mobile customers will now be able to take advantage of 3G coverage on flights, after the operator penned a new agreement.

The mobile operator has agreed a new deal with OnAir, which provides services allowing mobile users to take advantage of mobile services on board aircraft.

OnAir makes use of nanoGSM picocell technology to ensure the quality of 3G mobile signal onboard aircraft, which is also used across marine, oil and gas industries.

Services will be available to Orange Pay Monthly customers on selected airlines only at this stage, according to a spokesperson.

He said: "Customers will be advised by the airline during flights whether the service is available and how much it will cost them on average.

"The service operates like a conventional roaming service - to make and receive calls and texts, customers will connect to the OnAir network while in the air. Customers will not be charged for receiving texts."

Qatar Airways, Hong Kong Airlines, Ryanair, Royal Jordanian and Egytair have all signed up to OnAir so far.
