Consumer demand for 3G services is causing Verizon Wireless to enhance its networks, it has been highlighted.

The firm recently revealed that it invested around $485 million (£314.4 million) last year, in order to improve the capabilities of its network in California.

Region president of the company Kevin Zavaglia has noted the demand that exists among mobile handset users for internet services.

He commented: "Because of this, we continue to aggressively invest in our network to increase coverage and capacity for our customers, add new services and maintain our 3G network superiority."

According to Verizon Wireless, in the last decade it has invested as much as $55 billion to improve its networks in the US.

The impact that smartphones are having on mobile networks was recently emphasised by Lynnette Luna, writing in an article for Fierce Broadband Wireless.

As a result, data offloading is likely to become an important area of focus, she believes. ADNFCR-2406-ID-19626815-ADNFCR
