Half of Americans and 30 per cent of Brits believe their mobile phone is "essential" to their everyday life, according to a new survey.
The Lightspeed Research poll also showed that nearly half of Brits (46 per cent) carry their mobile phones with them wherever they go, which underlines the importance of indoor mobile coverage.
Two-thirds of Brits also admit to leaving their phone on at night, while those aged between 18 and 34-years-old claim they would be "lost without it".
David Day, chief executive officer at the research company, highlighted the importance of particular functions.
He said: "The mobile phone is an important tool for daily life for many of the people we surveyed, and that many people use the additional phone applications such as photos, video, music and the internet."
The research also showed that half of Brits send a text message at least once per day, with one in 20 sending picture or video messages on a daily basis.
This Lightspeed Research survey follows another poll by Wi-Ex State, which indicated that more than a third (34 per cent) of mobile phone users in the US experience problems with indoor coverage in the home.
Informa Telecoms & Media's recent report on 'Mobile Broadband Access at Home' highlighted the fact that 70% of mobile phone traffic is generated inside buildings. As mobile phone usage continues to grow, the need for enhanced in-building signal strength and network capacity will become increasingly important.
