Gartner: Q4 2009 saw further smartphone market growth

The global market for smartphone devices saw further growth in the final three-month period of last year, Gartner has noted.

According to the firm's research director Carolina Milanesi, end users purchased 53.8 million of these devices during the quarter.

"In 2009, smartphone sales reached 172.4 million units, a 23.8 per cent increase from 2008," she commented.

The expert went on to say that the strong performance of smartphones boosted the overall mobile phone market as last year came to a close.

Around 340 million end users were sold mobile phones in the last quarter, Gartner believes.

While smartphone sales may be on the up in various regions of the world, the pressure that the devices seem to be putting on mobile data networks has recently been touched upon by a number of commentators.

O2 is one mobile network operator that is seeking to match people's data demand with network investment, the firm's chief technology officer Derek McManus recently revealed.ADNFCR-2406-ID-19638016-ADNFCR
