Seven in ten IT decision-makers working for manufacturing firms indicate that they intend to use mobile and wireless devices to improve efficiency, research shows.
Eight in ten of those surveyed said that mobility was more important for their organisation today than in 2008, with those businesses investing in IT infrastructure indicating that it improved employee productivity, according to the Motorola survey.
Over one-quarter of those surveyed said that inventory/materials management and sales force applications were the top drivers for mobility investments, while 29 per cent cited an increase in businesses sales.
Jim Hilton, senior director of global manufacturing solutions for Motorola, believes that IT managers regard wireless infrastructure as strategically important today.
He said: "In fact, more than one-half of those surveyed cited a competitive advantage through the use of mobile and wireless technologies to empower their shop-floor and field-mobility workforce to take advantage of opportunities in the marketplace."
A recent survey by independent analyst firm Quocirca revealed that one third of European businesses experience mobile phone network coverage problems in their offices. Picocells provide a cost-effective option for operators to improve signal strength and increase network capacity in business premises.
