Network operators require femtocells as well as LTE

Femtocells could prove useful in helping mobile network operators to deal with consumer demand for data, in addition to LTE, it is believed.

Writing in a feature for Reuters, Nicola Leske comments that LTE may not be enough on its own to help operators deal with this issue.

Products like femtocells may therefore gain greater prominence, she feels, while WiMax might also be an option for some.

In her Reuters article, Ms Leske writes: "Femtocells ... could go from a niche product to mass market."

This technology is already being offered to consumers in the UK and France by Vodafone and SFR respectively, the writer highlights.

People's use of smartphones seems to be on the rise around the world, with Gartner recently announcing that the closing three-month period of last year saw 53.8 million end users purchase such handsets.

In total, 172.4 million units were sold over the course of last year.ADNFCR-2406-ID-19640914-ADNFCR
