Femtocells could help mobile operators to cope with iPads and other devices which are likely to place strain on networks, according to one expert.

Simon Saunders, chairman of the Femto Forum, has pointed out the growing amount of people who are making use of mobile data services.

He believes that touchscreen smartphones and netbooks are among the devices that have led to this trend, with the iPad likely to create even greater demand.

A Signals Research Group study recently found that femtocells can offer financial benefits to operators while addressing consumer demand for mobile data.

Responding to this research, Mr Saunders commented: "Femtocells properly targeted to complement and enhance macrocell deployments represent the most economical means for operators to deliver a managed mobile broadband service that meets subscriber capacity and service quality demand."

Highlighting the popularity of smartphones, IDC recently confirmed that last year saw 174.2 million of the devices shipped.ADNFCR-2406-ID-19611437-ADNFCR
