Two of the additional applications that femtocells could offer to consumers have been highlighted by an ABI Research expert.
Speaking in an EE Times article, the organisation's practice director of mobile networks Aditya Kaul has outlined some of the extra benefits that people might be able to take advantage of in the future.
The news provider reports him as saying: "Soon, a femtocell will be able to detect when one of its users enters its network and can be programmed to send an SMS letting you know who just arrived."
Femtocells also have the potential to make life easier for those who need to synchronise their iPods, he added.
Meanwhile, in the same EE Times article, Patrick Mannion and Michael Azzara have noted that price reductions may see a greater take-up of femtocells in 2010.
The Femto Forum's chair Simon Saunders recently emphasised the increased mobile data demand that the Apple iPad might create, although femtocells could offer one way of dealing with this.
